Clematis viticella

The bell shaped flowers on this vigorous hardy Clematis species are borne in great numbers from July to September, the colour can be variable between violet, red/purple dark purple to denim blue, often with a white blaze on the inside of the tepal. It comes from Southern Europe and has a wide distribution, cultivated in the UK since the 1500's , it would however not be surprising to learn that the Romans had also brought Clematis viticella here 2000 years ago!. It has produced some very good forms (see 'Purple Haze') and is the parent in a good many of the best hybrid clematis, imparting as it does a hardy easygoing nature to its offspring.

We call our selection  'Piskey' A deep purple narrow flowered form
